Jonathan Smith
Former General Manager, Australian Marine Complex – Common User Facility (2010-21)

Jonathan is an experienced general manager with extensive Australian and international credentials in successful, high-profile and complex industrial projects, with significant senior management responsibilities for the total life cycle of high value-added products and services.

He also has wide-ranging experience in both commercial and defence environments with major clients.

Jonathan was the Business Development Manager and General Manager of the Australian Marine Complex Common User Facility (AMC CUF) in Henderson, WA, for 15 years from 2006 to 2021.

During his tenure, the AMC CUF serviced over 400 projects employing thousands of local workers, created over $2.55bn of economic benefit to the State and expanded the original infrastructure to service a growing WA industrial base.

The AMC CUF became a centre of excellence for local industry to undertake major projects in the naval defence, oil and gas, mining and marine industry sectors.

A graduate naval architect from Strathclyde University, Glasgow, Jonathan entered British Shipbuilders as a graduate engineer in 1980 before joining Swan Hunter Shipbuilders in Newcastle, UK, initially working on performance improvement and productivity initiatives, and introducing Japanese shipbuilding methods and controls across production.

A post-graduate MBA in Industrial Management led to management positions in the engineering department, where he was the Technical Manager for the UK’s Type 23 frigates.

In 1997, Jonathan moved to Melbourne to build Anzac-class frigates at the Tenix Williamstown Shipyard, transferring to the Tenix Henderson Shipyard in 2002 as the General Manager, where naval maintenance on Anzac frigates and Collins-class submarines was undertaken, along with para-military and commercial new builds and maintenance.

The WA government AMC CUF was being built during Jonathan’s tenure at Tenix Henderson and he engaged with the government on the utilisation of the AMC CUF to provide deepwater berthing for future Tenix projects.

As the Proposals Manager on the Royal Australian Navy’s SEA 1654 Phase 2A (the conversion of the merchant tanker Delos to HMAS Sirius) project, Jonathan combined his knowledge of the development at the AMC CUF with the capabilities of the adjacent Tenix Henderson shipyard to deliver a winning tender that brought the first major project to the AMC CUF.

Since retiring, Jonathan has undertaken consulting assignments for the Northern Territory and Queensland governments.

From 2021, Jonathan was affiliated to the WA DEFENCE REVIEW Editorial Advisory Group, and latterly in 2023 was appointed as a Senior Associate.
